Objective: Learn the accepted quilting-industry standards for resale quilts and configure the Janome MC8200 to produce work that meets buyer expectations.
Selling quilts means meeting conventions buyers assume without asking. The piecing standard is a 1/4" seam allowance, measured consistently so blocks finish to their nominal size; use the Janome 1/4" seam foot (O) and confirm the needle-drop lands a true quarter inch from the fabric edge. Quilting stitch length is conventionally set between 10 and 12 stitches per inch, which on the MC8200 is roughly a 2.0 to 2.5 mm stitch length for walking-foot (foot AcuFeed) straight-line work; for free-motion you drop the feed dogs and control length by hand speed, aiming for even stitches about that size. Binding convention is a double-fold (French) binding cut 2.25" to 2.5" wide, attached with a 1/4" seam and folded to the back. Thread convention favors 40- or 50-weight cotton or poly for durability; match top and bobbin weight to avoid tension flaws that buyers reject. Finally, resale and consignment almost always require a sewn-in label stating fiber content (e.g., 100% cotton top/backing, polyester batting), care instructions (machine wash cold, tumble low), finished size, and your maker name. These conventions protect you legally (fiber labeling) and signal professional quality that justifies your price.
Example: You are finishing a 60"x80" throw for a boutique. You piece with foot O at a tested 1/4" seam so your 12.5" cut blocks finish at 12". You attach the AcuFeed walking foot, set a straight stitch, and dial stitch length to 2.2 mm (about 11 stitches per inch) for the straight-line grid quilting. For the center feathers you lower the feed dogs, snap on the free-motion foot, and quilt at a steady pace to keep stitches near that same length. You cut binding strips 2.5" wide, join them, press in half, and sew on at 1/4". You then stitch in a label: '100% cotton. Polyester batting. Machine wash cold, tumble dry low. 60x80 in. Handmade by [you].'
Try it: Set up your MC8200 for a resale-standard sample: install foot O and sew two scraps, then measure the seam to confirm it is a true 1/4" (adjust needle position if not). Switch to the walking foot, set stitch length to 2.2 mm, and sew a 6" straight line; count your stitches per inch and confirm you are between 10 and 12. Finally, write out a complete care/content label line for a cotton quilt with polyester batting.
