Building Your First Small Project

Objective: Produce a complete four-patch potholder top on the Janome MC8200, practicing accurate 1/4" piecing and consistent seams suitable for resale items.

A four-patch potholder is the ideal first project because it uses only straight seams, a handful of pieces, and finishes small enough to complete quickly while teaching the core habits every quilt for sale depends on: accurate cutting, a true quarter-inch seam, pressing, and even stitch tension. On the MC8200, select the straight stitch (default pattern 1), attach the quarter-inch foot, and set the needle to center. A stitch length of 2.0 to 2.5 mm is standard for piecing cotton. Keep presser foot pressure at the default for quilting cotton and engage the thread cutter button to trim neatly between seams. The single most important skill is the 1/4" seam allowance: this is what makes blocks finish to their planned size. If every seam is a thread too wide, a block that should finish at 8 inches shrinks and nothing lines up later, a defect buyers notice. Chain-feed logic matters too: sew pairs of squares, press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric, then join the pairs so the center seams nest tightly for crisp, matched intersections.

Example: Cut four 4.5-inch squares, two light and two dark. Right sides together, sew one light to one dark along the right edge, letting the fabric edge ride the guide on the quarter-inch foot; repeat for the second pair. You now have two rectangles. Press each seam toward the dark fabric. Flip one pair so the colors alternate, place the two pairs right sides together, and feel the center seams butt against each other (nest). Sew the long seam at 1/4". Open it up: you have a four-patch where all four squares meet at one sharp center point. Each finished square measures 4 inches, and the whole block measures 8 inches square, confirming your seam allowance was accurate.

Try it: Cut four 4.5-inch squares (two contrasting colors). On the MC8200, confirm straight stitch, 2.2 mm length, center needle, and quarter-inch foot. Sew the two pairs, press toward the dark, nest the centers, and sew the final seam. Measure your finished block with a ruler. Write down the measurement and note whether your center point matches cleanly.
