Planning and Architecture

What you'll be able to do

Planning and Architecture

Objective: Create a build architecture for your capstone signature item: a cut list, an ordered seam sequence, and a machine-settings map, plus a costing estimate that lets you price it for sale.

Before you touch fabric on a capstone piece, you design the build on paper so the sewing goes right the first time. Think of a product in three layers of planning. First, the cut list: every pattern piece with its finished dimensions plus seam allowance, how many to cut, grain direction, and any interfacing. This prevents wasted fabric and tells you exactly how much yardage to buy. Second, the seam sequence: the ordered list of steps from first seam to final pressing, written so an interior seam is never trapped behind a later one. A good test is working backward from the finished item and asking 'what was the last thing I could physically reach?' Third, the settings map: for each step, name the stitch (straight 1.0.00, zigzag, overcast, or a decorative), stitch length and width, the presser foot (standard A, zipper E, 1/4" O, walking foot), needle type and size, and tension. On the MC6650 you can pre-plan these because the machine shows stitch number and length/width on screen, and the memory and start/stop button let you repeat identical settings across a batch. Finally, costing turns the plan into a business decision: materials cost from the cut list, plus labor (your estimated minutes times your hourly rate), plus overhead and a margin. The architecture is the bridge between a creative idea and a repeatable, profitable product.

Example: Signature item: a lined zip pouch. Cut list - exterior 2 pieces 9x7" (quilting cotton, cut on grain), lining 2 pieces 9x7", fusible fleece 2 pieces 8.5x6.5"; 9" zipper; all pieces include 1/2" seam allowance. Seam sequence: (1) fuse fleece to exterior wrong sides; (2) install zipper between exterior and lining tops; (3) topstitch along zipper; (4) open zipper halfway, sew exterior-to-exterior and lining-to-lining around, leaving a turning gap in the lining; (5) box the corners; (6) turn, close gap, press. Settings map: Step 2 straight stitch 1.0.00, length 2.5, foot E zipper, size 80/12 needle, tension 4; Step 3 topstitch length 3.0, foot A; Step 4 straight length 2.5, foot A; Step 6 ladder/edgestitch length 2.5. Costing: materials $4.50, labor 30 min at $20/hr = $10, overhead $1 = $15.50 cost; price at 2.5x = about $39.

Try it: Pick your capstone signature item and write its full architecture on one page: (1) a cut list with piece names, cut dimensions including seam allowance, quantities, and grain; (2) a numbered seam sequence from first step to final press, checked by working backward so no seam gets trapped; (3) a settings map naming the MC6650 stitch number, length/width, foot, needle, and tension for each sewing step; and (4) a costing line totaling materials + labor + overhead and a proposed sale price.
