Choosing a Meaningful Project

What you'll be able to do

Choosing a Meaningful Project

Objective: Select a single signature product for your home business that aligns with your current MC6650 skills, available time, and a genuine market need.

A signature project is the one item you will make repeatedly, refine, and build a brand around, so it must pass three filters at once. First, Skill Fit: it should use techniques you already perform reliably on the MC6650 and showcase one standout feature—a crisp automatic buttonhole, a clean quilted texture from the walking foot, or a decorative stitch edge—rather than demanding something you've never attempted. Second, Time Fit: a home business lives or dies on per-item labor. Estimate honestly how long one finished unit takes from cutting to pressing; a product taking four hours won't scale from a kitchen table. Aim for items you can complete in roughly 45-90 minutes once you're practiced. Third, Market Fit: someone must want it at a price that covers materials plus your time. Low-competition niches (personalized zipper pouches, quilted placemats, structured tote bags) often beat crowded ones (plain t-shirts). To decide objectively, list 3-4 candidate products and score each from 1-5 on Skill Fit, Time Fit, and Market Fit, then total. The highest score, not your gut feeling, becomes your capstone. This keeps you from choosing something flattering but unsellable, or sellable but beyond your reach today.

Example: Priya lists four ideas and scores each (Skill/Time/Market, 1-5): Baby quilt (3/2/4 = 9), Zippered pouch (5/5/4 = 14), Lined tote bag (4/4/5 = 13), Button-up shirt (2/2/3 = 7). The zippered pouch wins: it uses her reliable straight stitch and zipper foot, takes about 50 minutes, costs $4 in materials, and sells locally for $22. She chooses the pouch as her signature project and plans to differentiate it with a decorative top-stitch edge she practiced in Unit 3.

Try it: Write down 3-4 product ideas you could make on the MC6650. For each, assign a 1-5 score for Skill Fit, Time Fit, and Market Fit, and note one standout machine feature it would showcase. Total the scores and circle the winner. In one sentence, state why that product is your signature project.
