Industry Standards and Conventions

Objective: Learn the real-world sizing, stitch, and labeling conventions resale quilts must meet, and set your Memory Craft 8200 to produce them reliably.

Resale quilts are judged against conventions buyers quietly expect. Sizing follows standard mattress dimensions plus drop: a throw runs about 50x60 in, twin 70x90, full/queen 90x95, king 108x95. A 1/4-inch seam allowance (scant 1/4 in to account for thread thickness) is the universal piecing standard, which keeps blocks squaring up to their math. Quilting density matters for durability and value: most retail quilts hold 6-10 stitches per inch (SPI) for straight-line and free-motion work, with stitch lines no more than 8-10 inches apart so the batting won't shift or bunch after washing. Thread convention is 40- or 50-weight cotton or poly for piecing and quilting; 100% cotton is the premium selling point. Batting loft and fiber get disclosed to the buyer. Care labels in many markets must state fiber content and washing instructions, so you keep a simple spec sheet per quilt. On the Memory Craft 8200, these conventions map to concrete settings: use the 1/4-inch foot (O) for piecing, set stitch length to 2.0-2.4 mm (roughly 10-12 SPI machine-wise, which reads as a clean, even seam), engage the AcuFeed/even-feed system for straight-line quilting to prevent layer drift, and use the needle-down and auto thread-cutter functions to keep seams consistent at starts and stops.

Example: You're making a throw to sell. Standard: 50x60 in finished. Set piecing stitch length to 2.2 mm with the 1/4-inch foot and sew a scant 1/4-in seam so 5-in cut squares finish at 4.5 in as the math predicts. For quilting, attach AcuFeed, set stitch length to 3.0 mm for visible even straight lines, and space your quilting rows 3 in apart — well within the 8-10 in maximum, giving dense, durable, resale-grade quilting. You then write a spec card: 'Throw, 50x60 in, 100% cotton top & back, cotton/poly batting, machine wash cold gentle, tumble low.'

Try it: Pick one quilt size you plan to sell and write its finished dimensions. Then list the exact 8200 settings you'll use: foot, piecing stitch length, quilting stitch length, feed system, and whether needle-down/auto-cut are on. Finally, draft a one-line care label stating fiber content and washing instructions.
